June 22 The donjon at Pons, about 40km inland from Talmont. The donjon ["keep" in english] was built in the time of the Hundred Years War in the 1300's and early 1400's. The castle is all that remains of a much bigger fortification of the whole city. It's in excellent condition. The style is distinctly Norman/English, compared to the indigenous French style of the same period in my slide from Barbezieux in the next set. I gave myself a tour early next morning. |
