July 2 Cordes-sur-Ciel, between St Antonin and Albi. "sur" [on] in a French placename is usually followed by the name of a river. In this case though, "Ciel" is "the sky"; literally "Cordes-in-the-Sky". The town was built on an easily-defended hilltop and successfully resisted seiges during the Albigensian Crusades ( early 1200's). The D-600 skirts the town about halfway up the hill; I didn't go to the top. It was just tooooo steeeep. |
