Le Chateau de Chenonceaux is built on a bridge that
extends halfway across the Cher. It was a gift from Henri II to his mistress
Diane de Poitiers, but upon the king's death was seized by his widow,
Catherine, who sent Diane packing off to little Chaumont. There is a huge
Italian garden attributed to Diane,
and
a smaller one, the Medici
garden.

The round building on the right is the guard tower; the larger section to
the left has the apartments and reception rooms; the part of the building
out over the river has long galleries on two floors. |
