The cathedral at Chartres is visible for about 10 km across the prairie of the Beauce. Most of the town is tucked into a river valley, with the cathedral at the top of a rocky pinnacle in the middle of the valley. The impression from afar is that there is a cathedral standing alone on the prairie.
